Building Integrated Greenhouses SA

Topography map of Europe highlighting Brussels, Belgium

BIGH, which stands for Building Integrated Greenhouses, is an aquaponic farm located in the centre of Brussels on the roof of the FoodMet, a local market hall, on the historical Abattoir site. We aim to increase the self-sufficiency of cities by producing food locally in a circular system.

The four main types of production are aromatic herbs, microgreens, vegetables, and fish farming (salmon trout). The total area of the farm is around 4000 m² with the following production facilities:

  • An outside garden of 2000 m²
  • Two greenhouses for aromatic herbs, microgreens and vegetables of 1400 m²
  • A recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) of 500 m²

Role in the project

BIGH will mainly be involved in the case study 3 (Task 6.4) which aims to examine the supply chain of fish and aquaculture products in Brussels.

BIGH will provide valuable feedback from its experience gained from the climate-smart aquaponic urban farming system where fish, fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown in a closed and zero waste loop (WP2). This feedback will be used to analyse the vulnerabilities challenges of those food value chains and the short- and long-term impacts of the different food security drivers, so as to ultimately study interventions and propose recommendations that would improve their sustainability and resilience.
