As SecureFood enters its final year, the Ukrainian Grain Case Study has made significant progress in demonstrating how digital technologies can strengthen the resilience of food supply chains during times of crisis.

Over the course of three successful pilot demonstrations, partners tested and validated several SecureFood tools under realistic disruption scenarios affecting Ukraine’s grain sector. These pilots focused on helping stakeholders anticipate disruptions, improve decision-making, and maintain continuity across the supply chain.

 

Scenario 1: Managing price volatility and rising input costs

The first pilot explored how fluctuations in energy and fertiliser prices can affect grain production, market stability and supply chain performance.

Partners tested:

  • Early Warning System (EWS) and Observatory Dashboard to monitor energy and grain markets and alert stakeholders when critical price thresholds were reached.
  • Digital Twin simulations to explore how rising input costs could affect farming, transport and processing.
  • AgriPoliS to assess how farms could adapt their strategies under economic pressure.
  • Information Exchange Platform (IEP) to securely exchange resilience strategies between stakeholders using blockchain-enabled smart contracts.

Scenario 2: Responding to supply chain disruptions

The second pilot focused on war-related disruptions, including port congestion, transport bottlenecks and potential grain shortages.

Key activities included:

  • Secure grain stock reporting through the IEP, providing verified information on stock location, grain type, volume and storage conditions.
  • Logistics coordination and rerouting through the IEP when delays affected Black Sea ports.
  • Digital Twin simulations to help downstream processors assess grain availability and adapt production schedules.

SecureFood solutions

Across the three pilots, the consortium successfully integrated and validated five core SecureFood solutions:

  • Observatory Dashboard
  • Early Warning System
  • Digital Twin
  • AgriPoliS
  • Information Exchange Platform

Together, these tools demonstrated how an integrated digital ecosystem can improve situational awareness, collaboration and decision-making during supply chain disruptions.

Key Outcomes

The three pilot demonstrations provided practical evidence of how SecureFood tools can help stakeholders monitor markets, anticipate disruptions, model potential impacts and coordinate responses.

The pilots also demonstrated the value of secure stock reporting, alternative logistics coordination and real-time information for downstream decision-making, contributing to greater crisis preparedness and resilience across the grain supply chain.

Looking Ahead

In its final year, the Grain Case Study will build on the lessons learned from the pilots to further refine and validate the SecureFood solutions. The remaining work will focus on consolidating results, incorporating stakeholder feedback and exploring opportunities for uptake beyond the project, helping to support faster responses and greater resilience across European grain supply chains.
